Short answer
An Instagram follower CSV should identify the source account, stable user ID when available, username, profile URL, collection date, account status, and requested, collected, and retained counts. Keep public-profile enrichment—biography, metrics, links, category, or contact fields—as a separate stage so an audience-identity export is not confused with a partial enrichment result.
Why teams want a follower CSV
Instagram is designed for in-app browsing, not for cross-account spreadsheet analysis. Social media managers still ask how to export statistics or follower-related data into Excel because manual review is slow and difficult to share. Reddit: exporting Instagram analytics (opens in a new tab)
A CSV makes it possible to:
- filter usernames and account status;
- merge several source accounts;
- calculate unique profiles;
- add public profile fields;
- compare current and later snapshots;
- load the records into Excel, a database, or a research workflow;
- assign manual review without sharing an Instagram session.
But a poor CSV can create false confidence. A file with 50,000 usernames and no source account, collection date, stable ID, or coverage notes is difficult to audit.
Separate follower identity from profile enrichment
These are two different data layers.
Follower identity layer
The identity layer represents the accessible follower relationship.
Recommended fields:
source_account
source_account_url
instagram_user_id
username
display_name
profile_url
is_private
is_verified
collected_atThis is the correct base for source counts, cross-account deduplication, and membership analysis.
Public profile layer
The profile layer contains fields retrieved from the individual profile.
Possible fields:
instagram_user_id
username
biography
bio_hashtags
bio_mentions
followers_count
following_count
posts_count
business_category
public_email
public_phone
website
bio_links
profile_collected_atThe second layer will often have lower coverage because some profiles are private, unavailable, restricted, renamed, or missing the requested field.
Keeping the layers separate lets the delivery say:
- 50,000 follower identities collected;
- 42,700 public profiles accessible for enrichment;
- 31,900 biographies available;
- 5,100 public emails published.
That is much more useful than one master file containing unexplained blanks.
Why the displayed follower count may not equal the CSV row count
The number shown on an Instagram account is not a contract for identical row-level access.
Differences may be caused by:
- the account changing during collection;
- profiles becoming deleted or unavailable;
- private or restricted profiles;
- repeated results during pagination;
- source-side list limits or ordering behavior;
- collection stopping at an agreed maximum;
- access or platform changes during the project;
- invalid or duplicate identities removed during QA.
Scraping practitioners frequently report repeated profiles, follower-list restrictions, rate limits, and session challenges. These reports do not create a universal limit, but they show why a pilot and source-level count reconciliation are necessary. Reddit: Instagram profile scraping (opens in a new tab), Reddit: follower scraping and account risk (opens in a new tab)
The delivery should include:
| Metric | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Displayed follower count | Context observed during collection |
| Requested maximum | Contracted collection limit |
| Raw records returned | Pre-QA extraction volume |
| Unique identities retained | Source-level accepted rows |
| Enriched public profiles | Profiles successfully processed |
| Unavailable/private profiles | Documented exceptions |
Use a stable identity key where possible
Usernames are easy to read, but they can change. An Instagram user ID, when legitimately available, is normally a better technical key.
Recommended identity logic:
- Use the platform user ID as the primary key when available.
- Retain the current username as a separately observed field.
- Keep the source account and collection date.
- Do not merge two rows only because their display names match.
- Record rename or identity conflicts for manual review.
For a multi-account project, assign an internal master_profile_id after deduplication. This separates the client's stable record from a username that may later change.
Preserve the source account
A profile may follow several related accounts. If the source column is removed, the most valuable audience-overlap signal disappears.
For example:
| username | source account |
|---|---|
maker_one | brand_a |
maker_one | brand_b |
studio_two | brand_b |
The master output should become:
| username | source accounts | source count |
|---|---|---|
maker_one | brand_a, brand_b | 2 |
studio_two | brand_b | 1 |

Handle names, biographies, and emojis correctly
Instagram names and biographies commonly contain:
- emoji;
- non-Latin scripts;
- accented characters;
- line breaks;
- hashtags and mentions;
- apostrophes and quotation marks;
- URLs containing query strings.
The export should use UTF-8. CSV generation should quote fields that contain commas, quotes, or line breaks. Do not split a biography into words before preserving the raw biography.
Recommended pattern:
biography_raw
bio_hashtags
bio_mentions
bio_linksThe parsed fields support analysis, while the raw value remains available for audit.
Do not promise public email coverage
A follower CSV can include public email, phone, website, or booking-link fields when they are published and accessible. It should not guarantee them.
Creator-marketing discussions repeatedly describe the same problem: many creators do not list business emails, and the addresses that are present may be personal or rarely checked. Reddit: influencer business-email difficulty (opens in a new tab)
Report the result as field coverage:
profiles_enriched: 10,000
public_email_present: 1,240
public_email_coverage: 12.4%
website_present: 3,870
website_coverage: 38.7%Public availability also does not establish permission for any particular campaign. The client must review its downstream obligations. FTC CAN-SPAM compliance guide (opens in a new tab)
Include a QA sheet
A strong follower delivery includes a short QA sheet or JSON summary.
Recommended checks:
- Required columns present
- Duplicate user IDs within each source
- Duplicate usernames with conflicting IDs
- Valid profile URL construction
- UTF-8 text preserved
- Requested versus collected counts
- Unique counts after deduplication
- Profile-enrichment success and failure counts
- Public field coverage percentages
- Source account and collection date present
Follower CSV versus official insights
Meta's official Instagram API exposes follower counts and aggregate audience insights in supported professional-account contexts. The IG User reference documents followers_count, while the documented Instagram Platform does not provide a general row-level export of another account's follower names. Meta IG User reference (opens in a new tab), Meta Instagram Platform (opens in a new tab)
This means an insights export and a follower-identity export answer different questions:
| Insights | Follower identity dataset |
|---|---|
| Aggregate metrics | Row-level accessible profiles |
| Demographic summaries | Username and profile relationships |
| Authorized account analytics | Approved project-specific source set |
| Good for performance reporting | Good for overlap, research, and structured review |
When a managed service makes sense
A browser extension may be enough for one small account and a one-time username list. A managed project becomes more valuable when you need:
- several source accounts;
- tens or hundreds of thousands of rows;
- public profile enrichment;
- cross-account deduplication;
- comments and profile joins;
- custom Excel or database schemas;
- coverage and QA documentation;
- a later fresh snapshot.

Frequently asked questions
Can Instagram followers be exported directly to Excel?
The final audience file can be delivered as .xlsx, but the collection and processing stages should still preserve stable identifiers, source membership, raw text, and timestamps outside a presentation-only workbook. Excel is a delivery format, not the complete data model.
Why is the CSV smaller than the follower count displayed on Instagram?
Displayed count, requested limit, accessible rows, accepted rows, and unique rows are different measures. Account changes, current accessibility, repeated results, unavailable profiles, limits, and QA exclusions can reduce the accepted delivery.
Should biography and email be included in the follower file?
They can be included when public-profile enrichment is part of the approved scope. Report identity collection and profile-field coverage separately so blank public emails are not mistaken for missing follower identities.
Which encoding should an Instagram CSV use?
Use UTF-8 and test the buyer's spreadsheet application. Instagram names and biographies can contain emoji, accents, non-Latin scripts, quotation marks, commas, and line breaks that must survive the export.
Is a username a permanent follower identifier?
No. Usernames can change. Preserve a stable platform ID when legitimately available, retain the observed username and profile URL, and document the fallback when username is the only identity key.
